David Barlow David Barlow (b. 1952), a biologist and film-maker with a background in scientific and medical photography, was honoured for his dedication to photomicrographic imaging. He specializes in filming on a tiny scale and achieving various special effects by, for example, compositing pictures on larger scenes, for added realism and popular appeal. The films he has worked on include such BBC documentary series as The Private Life of Plants and The Human Body, the IMAX production The Secret of Life on Earth, and the documentary feature In the Womb/Life before Birth.
