Oliver Meckes (b. 1963) and Nicole Ottawa (b. 1965), a photographer and biologist respectively, have revealed what would otherwise be invisible. As a team in science photography, they use such equipment as a scanning electron microscope to create medical, biological and technological images. In their work through the “Eye of Science” company, their self-avowed mission is to “to combine scientific exactness with aesthetic appearances, and thereby help to bridge the gap between the world of science and the world of art.” Their photographs, recording their skilful exploration of what they describe as the “fascinating forms and structures in a world beyond human vision”, may be characterized as not only of great scientific value, but also of artistic beauty.
