David Doubilet (b. 1946) is one of the world’s top underwater photographers. Described by NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC (which publishes most of his photographs) as a “consummate artist”, he displays a clear aspiration to create pictures in new, unique ways. His self-imposed challenge is “to redefine photographic boundaries each time he enters the water”.
The split-lens camera, his own invention, has enabled him to achieve some of his greatest shots. Overall, his images are beautiful, powerful and elegant. His many photo essays from the undersea world, over four decades, are of immense photographic and scientific value and have been widely acclaimed.
