David Malin (b. 1941 in England, resident in Sydney since 1975) is a photographic scientist-astronomer with a background as a chemist, specializing in optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and other techniques. Malin has invented new ways of extracting information from astronomical images of large, distant objects, thereby earning an international reputation.
These novel image-enhancement techniques have shown the Universe in unprecedented clarity and beautiful colour and led to the discovery of two new types of galaxy, which bear his name. Malin was honoured with the Award for “Malinization”, a method of enhancing faint features of photographic images that affords huge gains in speed to the photographic materials used in telescopy, and for the beauty and originality of his photographs.
