For his work to reveal significantly faded Indian pictographs by developing the cross-polarized enhancement procedure

James Henderson James Henderson (b. 1945) was honoured for his work of photographing ancient Indian pictographs (coloured symbols on rock surfaces) using polarized light. In the “spirit of Lennart Nilsson”, he has revealed what was previously invisible. The “Henderson cross-polarized enhancement procedure” is now an extensively used method of revealing substantially faded pigments, integral to archaeological field photography. This groundbreaking technique of rendering ancient and prehistoric images, including stone inscriptions and cave paintings, has saved an outstandingly valuable set of historical material for posterity. Not only are Henderson’s works unique, beautiful and indispensable scientific records; they also enable the general public to see, understand and be fascinated by early images.
